1. The first thing that you will need to do is see how far the black death spread during this time period. Click here, that will take you to a map of Europe. Go through and click on December of 1347, December of 1348, December of 1349, and December of 1350. Explain how far the plague was able to spread every year during this three year period. Why do you believe that the plague spread as quickly as it did in such a short time? At the end of the interactive map there were unaffected areas. Why do you believe that these areas were not affected by the black plague?
2. Now that you know how large an area was infected, you should learn how it happened so quickly. Click here and you will be taken to a website that will tell you where the black death came from and how it spread so quickly. As you read, answer the following questions.
-What were the main causes of the black plague?
-What impact did trade have on the black plague?
-This site claims that if it were not for the fleas and the black rat the plague would have never made it to Europe? Do you agree or disagree?
3. Now that you know how large the area of infected people was, you need to know what exactly you are going up against, and what the treatment options were. 4. Click here. This link will take you to a simulation where you will be able to see how disease can spread so quickly, and how devastating it can be. The difference is that instead of being set in Medieval Europe, your disease will be set in the present day world. The first thing that you will need to do is click on new game, and then choose the relaxed setting. This will allow the disease to spread quickly by simulating the unclean conditions that people lived in during the Middle Ages. You will then choose your disease class, which may be any of the three choices, and then name your disease. Then game will then begin by placing your disease in a random country. Make sure that you write down the date at the bottom right corner of the screen. This game was made by Europeans so the date will be shown as day/month/year. You will then need to click on the third bubble at the bottom of the screen to speed up the gameplay, this will allow you to finish the game and have time to finish your webquest. The main goal of the game is to decimate the world's population, and upgrading your disease in order to take out more of the world's population. To upgrade your disease you will click on disease at the bottom of the game, and you will upgrade your disease for effectiveness. After you have finished the game write down the date at the bottom right of the screen. How long was your disease able to last in the world until a cure was made and it was no longer harmful? When you have finished the game, go ahead and move onto the conclusion portion of the webquest.
